Independence Day Comes Early in Chicago
This afternoon and evening are one of the busiest times at Taste of Chicago. Attendance of over one million people is expected. Why the huge crowds? Because tonight, July 3, is the spectacular fireworks show featuring over 5,000 aerial devices and shells, along with a rousing concert by the talented Grant Park Orchestra. Why the fireworks are not on the traditional 4th of July, I can't tell you and no one else seems to be able to, either. My wife postulates that maybe it depends on what day of the week the 4th of July falls (it doesn't), and my neighbor says that since people often work on July 5, the city has the fireworks early so people don't have to worry about getting up early the next day. I think that's probably close, but my cynical side thinks it's so people can stay downtown later and spend more money -- hence, more entertainment tax revenue for Chicago. Whatever the case, it doesn't take away from the fact that the fireworks display is one of the best in the country, and is definitely worth fighting the throngs of people. And don't worry, if you can't make it tonight you can always catch the fireworks at Navy Pier that go on all summer.
