Marriott Hotels Go Smoke Free

Wednesday July 26, 2006

As reported by our About Hotels guide, the Marriott Hotel chain has joined Westin in making all of their hotels 100% smoke free. This includes all hotel properties owned by the chain, including Marriott, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn, TownePlace Suites and Marriott ExecuStay brands. The new ban will go into effect by October, 2006 in the 77 hotel properties in the Chicago area including the Marriot Downtown on Michigan Avenue, and the Renaissance on State Street.

The Marriot's move is a perfect example of how the free market will prevail. Obviously they saw a demand for this from their guests, so they changed their policy to accommodate it. The ban-crazy Chicago City Council should look at this as a lesson, and get back to improving city services instead of banning smoking, cell phones, foie gras, street musicians, pit bulls, trans fats, racing pigeons and whatever else they are concocting, such as their latest proposal to require dog owners to have microchips implanted in their pets (I am not making that up). Sorry, getting off my soapbox now...

Some Chicago hotels where you can still get a "smoking permitted" room (for now):
