Security Tightened at Chicago's Airports

Thursday August 10, 2006

In light of the foiled terrorist plot at London's Heathrow Airport, Chicago officials are warning travelers flying out of O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport to allow for at least two hours before a flight's scheduled departure time as there are sure to be long delays due to increased security checks.

Also, because of the new "severe" threat level issued by the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration is not allowing any liquids to be taken on board the aircraft, including carry-on baggage. Items prohibited include beverages, hair gels, shampoo, toothpaste, and lotions. This also applies to any food or beverages purchased within the terminals. They are allowing liquid medications, as long as the prescription label matches the identification of the person carrying it. Baby formula and expressed breastmilk, as well as juice for accompanying children will also be allowed.

These heightened security measures are expected to last for at least 12 to 72 hours.
