July is a very popular travel month in Chicago -- Taste of Chicago is in full swing, Lake Michigan is bright blue and the water is warm, and there is plenty to do. Here are some important things to know when traveling to Chicago in July.

July Events/Notes

  • Taste of Chicago - June 26 through July 5, 2009: The big daddy of Chicago summer festivals, the Taste of Chicago provides tons of food and great entertainment to over 3 million people each year.
  • Chicago Independence Eve Fireworks - July 3, 2009, 8:00 p.m.: Chicago holds its main fireworks display on July 3rd instead of the 4th -- supposedly the thought being that since the majority of people have the next day off, they can stay downtown later. A good thing, too, because with the over 1 million people that attend on that night it takes a considerable amount of time to get home. The fireworks are launched from Monroe harbor, so most spots near the lake front from Navy Pier to Soldier Field make for a decent view.
  • Fourth of July Fireworks at Navy Pier - July 4th, 2009, 9:30 p.m.: For those of you who can't bear the thought of fireworks on any day other than the 4th of July, Navy Pier will be providing a fireworks display with a patriotic music soundtrack. Here's the full Navy Pier fireworks schedule for the rest of the summer.
  • Old St. Pat's World's Largest Block Party - July 17-18, 2009: The Old St. Pat's World's Largest Block Party is attended by over 25,000 people and features great music and food. It's also known as a huge singles party, and Old St. Pat's claims that over 70 couples have met at the block party and later married.
  • Venetian Night - July 25, 2009: This lighted boat parade inspired by those in Venice, Italy, along with a large fireworks show draws hundreds of thousands of spectators each year.
  • Summer in Chicago: this is by far my favorite season. Here are some of my favorite things to do during summer in Chicago.
