Despite being well into fall, there are still lots of great things going on during October in Chicago. Despite what the averages say, weather during this month can vary widely -- sometimes it's unseasonably warm, and others can get downright cold (let's just say I went on many a trick-or-treating session as a kid with a winter coat on over my costume). Packing layers of clothing is definitely in order. Here are some other important things to know when traveling to Chicago in October.
October Events/Notes
- Chicagoween - October 23 - 31, 2009: Chicago's Daley Plaza turns into Franken Plaza the last week of October, and features hay rides, pumpkin decorating, storytellers, and acrobats Midnight Circus.
- Fall Fun at Navy Pier - Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through November 1, 2009: Formerly (and still unofficially) called Navy Fear, this fall celebration at Chicago's Navy Pier features spooky fun and attractions for the whole family.
- Boo! at the Zoo - October 17-18 and 24-25, 2009 - Brookfield Zoo goes (mildly) spooky with a fun Halloween celebration for the kids.
- Haunted Sanitarium - October 19 - November 1, 2009 - The Chicago Park District opens their haunted house in the Theater on the Lake, located at Fullerton Avenue (2400 N) and Lake Shore Drive. Leave the little ones at home, this event is recommended for teens and adults only.
- Spooky Zoo Spectacular! - October 24, 2009 - Lincoln Park Zoo has a yearly, free, family-friendly Halloween themed event.
