The stellar (pun intended) Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum was founded in 1930 by Chicago businessman and philanthropist, Max Adler. The Adler Planetarium is the United States' first planetarium, and features two full-size planetarium theaters -- the Sky Theater, which has a traditional Zeiss projector, and the StarRider Theater, which is a full "virtual reality" experience, making you feel as if you were floating through outer space!
The Astronomy Museum portion of the Adler contains one of the most important antique astronomy scientific instrument collections in the world. A number of exhibits educate on this vast universe of which we are a tiny part.
The Doane Observatory at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum showcases a huge aperture telescope with a 20 inch (.5 m) diameter mirror, which gathers 5,000 times more light than the human eye. The telescope is the largest one open to the public in the Chicago area, and is available for viewing during "Far Out Fridays", which takes place the first Friday of every month between 4:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
