IKEA Schaumburg in detail:

You wouldn't think a furniture and housewares store would be a popular tourist destination, but spend about 5 minutes inside the IKEA Schaumburg store and you'll notice a distinctly large number of languages and dialects being spoken. Part of the popularity may be due to nearby Woodfield Mall, another shopping mecca also popular with travelers. IKEA has also strategically built many fewer stores than most "big box" retailers, creating a scarcity and making it a destination spot.

IKEA was started by an ambitious teenager in Sweden in 1943, and has since grown to an international retailer with revenues in the tens of billions of dollars. Its Swedish roots are felt throughout the store, as all of the products style names are Swedish/Scandanavian, the most popular dish in the stores restaurant is Swedish meatballs, and various Swedish grocery items are also available.

IKEA specializes in modular furniture that comes un-assembled, the idea that the manufacturing costs saved are passed on to the consumer. The value of your time in figuring out how to put the stuff together is yours to determine, however. The store is also filled with inexpensive household goods such as clocks, lamps, fabric, and kitchen items.

One popular area at IKEA's Schaumburg location is Småland (Swedish for "small land"), a secure play area where parents can drop off their younger children while they shop -- a major convenience when shopping at IKEA on the weekends, when crowds are daunting and little ones can easily get lost in the shuffle.
