Lollapalooza has grown from Perry Farrell's modest-in-comparison summer tour in 1991 into a massive music fest that takes place each August in Chicago's Grant Park. Here's the Lollapalooza 2011 lineup:
HEADLINERS:
Coldplay
Formed by front man Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland in 1996, Coldplay broke big in 2000 with their monster hit "Yellow" and went on to become one of the most commercially successful bands in the world, selling over 50 million albums.
Deadmau5
Deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse") a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman, is a Canadian DJ known for his trademark costume mouse head (he even had a mirrored one made for the Grammy Awards) and has won numerous awards for his skill at composing dance tracks.
Eminem
Eminem, a.k.a. Marshall Mathers, is one of the most successful rap artists of all-time and his most recent album, Recovery, was the top selling album of 2010.
Foo Fighters
Dave Grohl was not about to let the sudden suicide of Nirvana band mate Kurt Cobain derail his music career, and he released the Foo Fighters self-titled debut album in 1995, playing every single track. Grohl then went on to recruit other musicians and the Foo Fighters have arguably become even more popular than Grohl's previous band.
Muse
Muse formed in England in 1994 and enjoyed much success overseas, but it wasn't until their 2006 album Black Holes that the group began to really catch on in the United States, and the current album, The Resistance, won a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
My Morning Jacket
While My Morning Jacket may not be a household name, they're big in the alt-emo music circuit which Lollapalooza has courted for years.
A Perfect Circle
A Perfect Circle is a "supergroup" formed by Tool front man Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel. Their current lineup also features former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, drummer Josh Freese, and bassist Matt McJunkings.
