About the Chicago Mexican Independence Day Parade:

Chicago's Mexican population is the second largest in the United States behind Los Angeles, so the celebration of "El Grito de la Independencia" and the start of the Mexican War of Independence in 1810 is understandably a big event.

Chicago honors its growing Mexican culture with a downtown parade annually each September, attended by thousands. Sponsored by the Mexican Civic Society, the parade has been held since 1969 and features floats representing historic Mexican events, marching bands, dance groups, and colorful costumes and flags.

Those looking for more of a local experience can attend the parade in the Little Village neighborhood on September 11, which features mariachi bands and "dancing in the streets." That parade steps off from 26th Street and Albany.
