The Bottom Line

One of the oldest hotels in Chicago, the Palmer House Hilton is a treasured Chicago landmark hotel. With its famous grand lobby, well-appointed rooms, and excellent service, the Palmer House Hilton feels opulent, but has reasonable prices considering its downtown location.

Guide Review - Palmer House Hilton Hotel

In the heart of Chicago's theater district, the Palmer House Hilton is steps to downtown attractions like the Art Institute, State Street shopping and the Sears Tower. Perfect for business travelers, the Palmer House is a few blocks from the financial district, and minutes from the McCormick Place Convention Center.

The Palmer House Hilton's lobby is a true artistic marvel, with its trompe l'oeil murals which have been restored to their original 1873 luster. The portraits are truly awe inspiring and make for one of the most impressive mural masterpieces in America. The Palmer House Hilton lobby is a tourist attraction in and of itself.

Though the rooms are done in dark colors, the classic Beaux Arts décor is also warm and inviting and the pillow top beds are very comfortable. Renovations of the rooms began in 2005 and will continue throughout 2006. The Palmer House Hilton features a 10,000-foot health club complete with a lap pool. Arcade stores include various sundry, clothing, antique and flower shops, and a hair salon.

Palmer House Hilton guests have two dining options -- French Quarter, a New Orleans inspired café, and Big Downtown, a casual 40s-style American restaurant serving everything from pizza to steaks. Room service and children's menus are also available.

Among my favorites, this French clad hotel is one of my top recommendations to family and friends visiting Chicago.
