American Childcare Service

By Prescott Carlson, About.com

In Brief:
Hotel babysitting is a great option when parents want to get out for a night on the town in Chicago by themselves. One company that provides this in the city is American Childcare Service.
What It Is:
American Childcare Service provides qualified childcare providers that will come directly to your hotel and babysit your children.
Is It Safe?:
ACS's childcare providers are mainly college students achieving degrees or certificates in child-related studies. They are subjected to a background check, a drug test, and also need to provide a minimum of 3 childcare references, which are also checked. The childcare providers will present parents with a photo security name badge upon arrival at the hotel. Childcare providers are also trained in CPR and first-aid.
How Much Is It?:
The rate as of January 2009 is $18.50 per hour, per family. They also charge a $20 flat "agency fee", and have a four hour minimum.
Do the Sitters Leave the Hotel?:
For safety reasons, childcare providers will not leave the hotel property with children under six. With older children, however, they will -- with your permission of course -- take them to local museums and attractions. Naturally, you would be responsible for the admission costs, etc.
